The Fluke VT02 infrared thermometer with thermal imaging capabilities takes noncontact surface temperature measurement and is used in monitoring electrical, mechanical, industrial, HVAC, and automotive systems. It measures temperature from -10 to +250 degrees C (14 to 482 degrees F) with an accuracy of + or - 2 degrees C or + or - 2% of the reading, whichever is greater, and a thermal sensitivity of less than or equal to 250mK. It has an uncooled pyroelectric ceramic sensor to capture and align thermal and visual images of the target, and it can focus at a minimum distance of 50cm. The thermal camera with LCD screen blends the visual and infrared images in 25% increments for inspection of full visual, incrementally blended, or full infrared images. The included SD memory card stores up to 10,000 images for inspection, analysis, and reporting on a computer. This thermometer is suitable for measuring the temperature of equipment, systems, and processes in electrical, mechanical, industrial, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), and automotive environments.

The Fluke VT02 has adjustable emissivity and adjustable reflected background temperature settings that compensate for heat emitted from the surface of shiny objects to increase the accuracy of the measurement. Its hot and cold spot temperature markers guide the operator to the hottest and coldest regions in the thermal image for evaluation. It has five different color palettes for different types of inspections, and comes with data analysis software. The thermometer enters sleep mode after 10 minutes of inactivity to help preserve battery life. The European Conformity (CE) marking indicates compliance with applicable European Union (EU) directives, and it conforms to applicable Australian standards and South Korean electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards. It comes with four AA batteries, a 4GB micro SD memory card, conversion adapter to a standard SD memory card, carrying case, SmartView reporting and analysis software on CD, and instructions.

Digital infrared thermometers measure the temperature of surfaces from a distance. They may measure temperature in Celsius, Fahrenheit, or both. Infrared (IR) thermometers work by focusing the infrared radiation emitted by a surface onto a detector called a thermopile. The thermopile turns the heat into electricity, which is measured and converted to a temperature reading. The reading is then displayed on an LCD display. IR thermometers are used to measure temperature when an object is fragile, as in ear thermometers, or dangerous to be near, as in the case of industrial equipment.

Fluke VT02 Visual IR Thermometer Review

I've had this tool for about three months now. I originally purchased it for use in the automotive field, which has been my trade probably for more years than many of you have been alive. I'm sure most of you have used the basic handheld infra red thermometers that are out there on the market and found them to be pretty useful. All I can tell you is, when you use this tool for the first time, it'll put a smile on your face, from ear to ear. Seriously. It's like being able to see for the first time. The amount of info you can get from one image is amazing. Say for example, you suspect a radiator for an overheating problem. The old way you had to point at every square inch of the radiator and either write down all of the recordings or try and develop a mental picture of the hot or cold spots. With the VT02 I just take one snap shot and I'm done, saving a lot of time. And it's not just a time saver. It's hard to explain. You just start seeing things differently. I have information I never had access to before, but it was there all along. You start seeing different ways of diagnosing problems.
It also helps with sales. Ever had a car with a binding caliper? You try and sell the customer the full pop, right? Calipers, rotors, pads but they think you're scamming them and say, "Just do the pads..." Take a shot of both right and left calipers, and even a FEW degrees difference between calipers is noticeable. It's no longer the mechanic's opinion, it's hard data that you can print out or save as a .jpg file (it comes with software for reports and stuff) and show the customer. It's now in the customer's lap to make the common since decision to make the safe choice.
It's great for looking at A/C stuff, heater core inlet and outlet temps for checking for plugged heater cores. I could go on on on, but if you've been in the business a bit, you already know what you can use it for. That's why you're here, right? :) And the more you use it, the more things you think of to use it for.
Speaking of using it for different things- I brought it home to mess around with it. I also experiment with electronics projects as a hobby. In particular, my latest obsession has become the Arduino micro controller boards. I knew my board was getting hot, but the VT02 pinpointed it to the onboard voltage regulator @175F. The rated voltage input is up to 20vdc. My supply was at 15vdc but still got the thing stinkin' hot. Dropped the voltage and all is good. I also checked my home A/C and heating system with it.
Fluke is CRAZY rugged. I have a Fluke 88-V DMM that's ridiculous and the build quality of the VT02 looks to be of the same heritage.
It's got a built in lens protector so you'll never lose it. Comes with a microSD chip for storing images. I think it has a two year warranty. Comes with a nice soft case.

Pros-Amazing technology, first of it's kind that I know of in this price range
- Like they say, "A picture is worth a thousand words" (and maybe some money in your pocket)
- It's got this "thermal blending" mode that lets you blend the "regular" pic with a thermal pic which helps in clarifying what you're looking at.
-Real time on screen blue and red floating pixels to indicate max and min temps. This is very useful for radiators, condensers etc...
- Fluke build quality
-Color thermal image of problem area (beautiful color display)
-You can save images as file or print it out
-You'll be the envy of the shop, so they'll have to get their own, I will NOT loan this one out :)

Cons- The price may seem cost prohibitive for some at first, but it has the potential to pay for itself quickly. In this case, you DEFINITELY get what you pay for
