My nephew got this bed (black wood, red cushion) for his Christmas gift. He is six feet tall and could no longer sleep on the bunk beds of his childhood. Now his bedroom looks almost like a studio apartment. He has much more floor space in the daytime, and he says it makes into a bed very easily at night, a much more comfortable bed than he has ever had. I notice some people complain about the steel frame. How does one make hinges out of wood, exactly? When you see the bed it is obviously a steel and metal frame construction; in fact my nephew is very pleased about the center bar (in the picture, which is steel) because it prevents it from weakening or sagging in the middle. He is a big-boned young man, not fat but a large, strapping, healthy youth who, like most teenagers, flings himself onto his bed with pretty free abandon. Every night he makes the futon out into a bed. Every morning he pops it back up into a sofa. He says it is very easy.

Because of this wonderful find, I ordered one for my own living room. Our old sofa had to be replaced after 17 years.

Do be aware that this is not a piece of furniture that will fit a very formal space. As noted, you can see the black metal below the futon (see picture), and it is obvious that it's metal, not wood like the arms. Ordering it in black might make it a bit less obvious, but if you have a fancy parlor, you won't be happy with this. You'll also probably have to spend more. (Also note the 2 sizes. The queen size works well for us because our living room is large, but if you are looking for something for a small living room or den, you may prefer the double size model.)

My living room is a comfy living space with books, my kids, the dog...I want something that looks decent, but what is a living room to me, would serve as a family room to some folks. We live in the city, and we only get so much space. With one room that must serve as living room, rumpus room and guest room all rolled into one, this works just great for us. It was easily put together in one morning by my 60 year old husband; my son hefted the futon over and flopped it into place; the box went out the back, and we were DONE. We got free postage and are very happy. There is a stop mechanism that keeps it from popping into the wall when you use the mechanism to flatten it into a bed; very little furniture moving is needed to do this, just pull the coffee table away a little and we're in business.

One more plus for the boomer generation: because there are no inner springs under the futon (as you may find on many more expensive sleeper sofas), it is soft enough to be comfortable, but firm enough that once you sit down on it, it isn't hard to get back up! I could no longer sit on our last sofa because I am arthritic and it was too low; this suits me fine!
