This is the new, improved model, KN-8828-B2-2X. For several years, the Hottop has remained the top-of-the-line home coffee roaster. It is the most expensive, but for those interested in a traditional drum roaster, it is well worth its asking price. It has a long history of satisfied customers and a well-deserved reputation. Free Coffee Samples: We will include at no extra cost three samples (one pound each) of very-high-quality Bolivian/Costa Rican Specialty and Premium green coffee beans to get you started on roasting, as soon as you open the box! These beans are 100% Arabica. What are the differences between the two programmable (KN-8828B & KN-8828P) models? The "B" model is designed to roast beans by time - you will have full control over total roast time, target roasting temperature to end, fan speed, and heater power. These can be easily changed during the roast. The combination of variables that are subject to programming changes are virtually infinite, however, if you are new to roasting just use the default values until you get more comfortable with the process. The "P" model is designed to roast beans by temperature. Each segment consists of an amount of time, temperature, and fan speed. You would predetermine these parameters for each segment and the machine will control the temperature. You would have full control of segments when programming the roast, but would only be able to change the target temperature of each segment once the roast begins. Most experienced roasters find that the "B" model gives ultimate roasting control. The "P" model is for roasters that want to have a self-made profile that can be easily repeated.

I recently purchased this roaster after my Behmor finally became unworkable. I had used the Behmor for about 3 years, roasting about 10 batches per week. So that is 1500 roasts -- not bad. For someone who roasted once a week, the machine would last 30 years. But we have five serious coffee drinkers in our household -- multiple morning cappuccinos all round, afternoon brewed coffee, decaf after dinner and into the evening-- and many dinner parties and guests as well.
I had to get rid of the Behmor because, despite cleaning it -- both with the self-cleaning cycle and occasional manual cleaning--it was no longer able to roast through first crack. The Behmor was advertised as able to roast a full pound. Maybe it could do that when I first purchased it. But I found that as I used it, its ability to roast into darker degrees decreased. Generally I would roast about 8 oz but set the machine for a 1 lb cycle. In short, the Behmor has such a conservative safety control built that you really can't roast as much coffee as claimed.
After doing some research, I decided that only an upgrade to the Hot Top would make sense. It seems expensive, but I did the math and found that the money saved by buying green coffee and roasting it will would pay for the machine in just over a year. And the coffee I had to buy in the supermarket after I threw out the Behmor was intolerable anyway. In other words, we would be throwing out money if we did not get a satisfactory roaster.
I have been using the Hot Top for one week and it is fantastic! I have complete control over all aspects of the roast cycle. I can roast up to 9 oz to any degree of darkness that I wish. The machine works beautifully. It is easy to operate and a pleasure to use. I highly recommend it as an upgrade from the Behmor, or, if you have the money and are sufficiently serious, instead of the Behmor as the next step up from an air popper.
